Nervous About Your First MRI? Here’s How to Prepare

If you’re scheduled for your first MRI, it’s normal to feel a little anxious. Many patients worry about the noise, how long the exam will take, or whether it will be uncomfortable. Knowing what to expect ahead of time can help you feel more relaxed and prepared.

At REDI Diagnostics Corp in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, our ARRT/MRRT-certified technologists guide patients through MRI exams every day. Our goal is to make your experience as smooth and comfortable as possible.

What should I wear?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal, including zippers, snaps, or buttons. Depending on the area being scanned, you may be asked to change into a gown.

Can I eat before my MRI?
MRI exams do not require dietary restrictions. You can eat, drink, and take your medications as usual.

What if contrast dye is needed?
If your referral indicates contrast, we will review your blood work for kidney function. Blood work must be completed within six months prior to your scan.

What about metal implants?
Before your exam, you’ll complete a detailed safety questionnaire so we can confirm that an MRI is safe for you. Most orthopedic implants are MRI-safe after four weeks post-surgery. Certain implants, such as pacemakers, aneurysm clips, and cochlear implants, may be contraindicated. If you have a nerve stimulator, we’ll request specific device information and verify safety guidelines with the manufacturer.

How do you help me stay comfortable?
We provide earplugs, an emergency call button, and clear communication throughout the exam. If you’re claustrophobic, our short, wide-bore MRI offers a more open design. REDI uses the latest AI-enhanced MRI software, allowing for super-fast scans with high-quality imaging. On average, a complete MRI scan of any part of the body with multiple sequences takes about seven-ten minutes.

If you have questions before your MRI, call REDI Diagnostics Corp at 201-773-4255 or book an appointment online. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
