Severe Varicose Veins: Is Radiofrequency Ablation the Best Treatment Option?

Severe Varicose Veins: Is Radiofrequency Ablation the Best Treatment Option?

Your varicose veins aren’t only causing your legs to ache and swell; they’re unsightly. It’s time to look into options to eliminate them.

Our board-certified radiologists at REDI Diagnostics Corp in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, whisk away varicose veins every day. The method we use depends on their severity. Your radiologist explains the best treatment option for your problem veins.

Do your veins look like bands of twisted ropes running down your legs? Are the veins causing your skin to protrude so that when you put your hand on your leg, you feel one bump after another?

If your varicose veins are severe, we’re likely to choose radiofrequency ablation (RFA) to close off the problematic veins. RFA is often one of the most effective treatment options, though laser ablation, sclerotherapy, or another method may be a better fit for your specific vein anatomy.

What is radiofrequency ablation?

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used in various medical specialties. Radio waves produce heat. The heat energy destroys the structure of your varicose veins.

RFA treats conditions as disparate as nerve pain caused by osteoarthritis to heart arrhythmias, uterine fibroids, and varicose veins.

What happens during radiofrequency ablation for varicose veins?

First, your radiologist uses local anesthesia to numb the target area. Using ultrasound, your expert provider maps the vein and makes a small incision at the site. Then they insert a small tube called a catheter into the vein.

The catheter delivers radiofrequency energy into your vein, generating heat that treats the damaged vessel. The heat causes the vein to contract, so blood is directed to other healthy blood vessels. The process damages the vein walls to the point that the vein is sealed.

Why we choose radiofrequency ablation for severe varicose veins

Radiofrequency ablation is an effective method to eliminate varicose veins.

High success rate

RFA has a success rate that approaches 100%. The method is successful in 97 out of 100 people.

Minimally invasive

The incision is tiny and usually doesn’t require stitches — just a small bandage. You don’t have to be sedated or have general anesthesia.

Quick recovery

The procedure takes less than one hour, is done as an outpatient, and you can walk out of the facility after it’s over. You’ll wear compression stockings for a few weeks.

Problematic veins are eliminated

You’ll be relieved of the distressing symptoms caused by varicose veins. Your legs will not only look better, but you’ll feel better physically.
