7 Questions to Ask Before Getting an MRI

MRIs can detect many health problems that X-rays and other tests can’t. An MRI can provide clarity and a diagnosis if you have unexplained symptoms.
Our board-certified radiologists with REDI Diagnostics Corp in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, understand that you likely have questions about your MRI if you’ve never had one. Following are some questions to help you gain information about your upcoming MRI.
What type of information does an MRI provide?
MRIs show detailed images of the inside of your body. MRIs help provide a definitive diagnosis for many types of health conditions, from tumors to heart problems to neurological issues.
Our radiologists review the images and write a report for your doctor. Your physician uses this information to develop a treatment plan for you.
I’m claustrophobic. Is there an open MRI?
REDI Diagnostics Corp understands you may have a fear of enclosed spaces. We use a GE Healthcare 1.5 Tesla short and wide bore MRI system that enables you to complete the test if you’re claustrophobic.
This type of MRI machine is shaped like a donut, with a hole in the middle. You lie on a flat table with part of your body inside the machine. Having a wide bore means this MRI machine has a larger opening, so the top and sides of the machine aren’t so close to you, allowing some breathing room.
This MRI also has a short bore, which means the tube is shorter than a traditional MRI machine. Part of your body can be outside the machine. For example, if your MRI is on your hips or abdomen, your head is all the way or partially outside the machine.
The MRI machine also has a call button you can push if you need to talk to your technician during the test.
Does an MRI involve injections?
Some MRIs require a contrast agent — a special dye we inject using an IV. If you’re fearful of injections, you can have a family member or friend with you when we place your IV and inject the dye.
I’ve heard MRIs are noisy. Can I bring headphones?
The MRI machine does produce loud noises at various intervals. Your technician reviews the procedure with you to ensure you know what’s happening during the test.
We provide you with earbuds and your choice of music. The music helps you relax during your test by drowning out some of the intermittent noise.
Are there contraindications to having an MRI?
In some cases, an MRI is contraindicated. To ensure that the MRI is safe, you complete a comprehensive medical history questionnaire.
The form asks about any metal implanted in your body like a stent or pacemaker. Our staff asks questions about the implanted metal such as how long it’s been inside your body.
Based on your answers to our questionnaire and your medical history, we evaluate whether it’s safe to proceed with the MRI. Most metal implants are safe for MRI purposes, but there are exceptions.
How long does an MRI last?
Most MRIs last 20-25 minutes. However, some can last up to 2 hours if the scan is of your entire body, but this is rare.
When will I have the results of my MRI?
Our radiologists issue a prompt report to your physician. Your doctor should have the results within 48 hours in most cases.
