Winter Is for Vein Care: 5 Reasons to Treat Varicose Veins Now

Every day you see your varicose veins — and so do others when the weather is warmer. If you’re tired of looking at those protruding, purple, rope-like lines running down your legs, you don’t have to live with them. Modern technology can whisk them away.

Our board-certified radiologists with REDI Diagnostics Corp in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, are vein experts. We treat a variety of vein-related disorders and offer imaging services, including MRIs.

Our physicians offer innovative treatments for your varicose veins and recommend the most effective options for eliminating them. The following are five reasons winter is a good time to treat your troublesome varicose veins.

Long pants cover you while you’re healing

Winter is a great time to have a procedure to eliminate your varicose veins. Varicose vein removal is safe and effective, but you’ll likely experience some bruising and swelling during your recovery.

No one has to know you’ve had varicose vein treatment if you have it during the winter. Long pants cover your legs. When you step out in springtime, you’ll have beautiful, smooth skin again.

You have plenty of recovery time

Many vein elimination treatments offer a fast recovery — a few days to one week. We encourage our patients to walk moderately every day to stimulate blood circulation. You need to avoid vigorous workouts for at least one week and follow other guidelines your doctor gives you.

You’ll notice significant fading within a few weeks after your procedure. You’ll see near-final results in about 12 weeks with most procedures and continuing improvement in the next month or two. Winter lasts about 12 weeks, so if you have a procedure in January, your skin should be returning to its natural beauty by or before the end of March.

You need to avoid sun exposure after varicose vein treatment

After varicose vein treatment, it’s important to avoid sun exposure for a few weeks. You should wear long pants, since the sun’s ultraviolet light can damage your skin after your procedure. That’s a prime reason to have varicose vein surgery in January.

Use of compression stockings

You’ll most likely be wearing compression stockings for 2-3 weeks after your varicose vein procedure. The stockings help reduce pain and swelling.

In the winter, compression stockings help keep your legs warm. You wouldn’t want to wear them in the spring or summer with shorts. Plus, they could make your legs sweat and become unsanitary.

Cold weather is a good time for physical recovery

When the weather is warm, you likely want to be outside enjoying the sunshine. However, excessive exercise for a few weeks after vein treatment is contraindicated. Your legs need more rest. Don’t let a vein procedure spoil a spring fling or summer vacation.

When it’s cold, snowy, and cloudy, it’s nice to be inside with a cup of coffee or hot cider. Winter is the perfect time to recover from a vein treatment.
